It was lovely to contribute to this Restless Magazine article in November 2019, asking why so many of us spend money we don’t have.

Why do we keep spending money we don’t have?

Here’s what I told Restless:

“It starts early on. From a very young age, we’re taught that purchasing is a reward, something to be excited about. We form pathways in our brain that link certain events together. And shopping is one of those events.”

Restless Magazine is no longer online, so the original article can no longer be read.

Money habits live in the unconscious mind

That’s why willpower alone rarely works. The link between buying and feeling good was made long before you were thinking about budgets.

I’m not immune to this stuff either. Not long ago I noticed my body reacting every time an unexpected bill landed. The old panic. So I did the work on myself again, and that’s where my Money Rewired hypnotherapy bundle came from.

The first step is simply noticing. What were you feeling just before you bought that thing? Once you can see the pattern, you can start to change it.
